How to Pack a Garage, Heavy and Odd Items for Moving

Moving to another home would be challenging, due to the items which you’ll need to pack. These range from the regular items to even the seemingly odd ones. Your stuff will naturally come in different sizes, and it’s quite important to know the best ways to pack them. After properly wrapping and securing your items, be sure to also have an exceptional mover on-call. This way, your movers may be thoroughly advised on the types of items which you’ll be transferring for efficiency purposes.

The items on your garage will naturally be complex to pack and you will also need to take some time in sorting through them. You’ll additionally have to choose the right packing materials so your items will get safely routed towards your target destination.

In reality, to pack up your garage for a move is not overly complicated if you care to follow some basic rules for packing a garage. To help you finish that seemingly frightening packing job easier, faster, and safer, we have gathered for you the top 25 tips for packing a garage for a move.

In reality, to pack up your garage for a move is not overly complicated if you care to follow some basic rules for packing a garage. To help you finish that seemingly frightening packing job easier, faster, and safer, we have gathered for you the top 25 tips for packing a garage for a move.

Advice on how to pack a garage for moving

1. As part of your storage areas, your garage will require a long time to be sorted out and packed up safely. This is why you need to initiate the packing process as soon as your residential move has been confirmed to guarantee yourself as much time as possible for the tough job ahead.

2. Get your moving calendar and make sure the entry pack garage has a top priority status in it. Remember that if you leave that task for much later in your preparations, you run the risk of being too low on time, energy, and motivation to do what’s required of you. And it’s never any fun to be behind schedule.

3. It’s time to get down to work. The first step is to supply the proper packing supplies as no packing job can begin without them. You will need cardboard boxes, rolls of bubble wrap, moving blankets, packing paper and/or newsprint, packing tape, plastic re-sealable bags, numerous zip ties, and a set of color markers.

4. The best way to pack a garage is to have the packing materials mentioned above. If you can afford to purchase them brand new from a local moving company or a specialized store, then you should do it. If you can’t, there are a number of good ways to get your hands on free moving boxes, for example.

5. Get hold of cardboard boxes that are in good overall condition, and most importantly – strong. Most garage items are heavy so you need sturdy boxes to hold them safely. Also, it’s important to have moving containers in different sizes because of the various shapes and sizes of the things you’re about to pack inside them.

6. You will need bubble wrap for the more fragile and valuable items found in your storage area. The air-filled plastic material is considered by many to provide unrivalled protection for delicate and breakable things. So, if you’re worried about the survival of some of your garage items, wrap them up well in bubble wrap to avoid accidental damage or breakage.Even if you keep your garage neat and tidy, and perfectly organized, start packing up your garage for moving as early as you can to avoid stressful situations.
7. What will prove very useful during the garage packing process are moving blankets. Their protection is excellent, and the great thing about them is that their protective area is big enough to keep larger items perfectly safe during transportation. Specialized moving blankets are ideal, but you can always use the much cheaper variant of using any old blankets you can find in your home as a substitute.

8. You will need plenty of small plastic re-sealable bags to keep tiny parts from being lost while they are being transported together with the predominantly larger garage tools and garage items in general. The small elements /bolts, nuts, screws, etc./ should accompany the main object they are taken from, either taped directly on it or placed beside it in the same moving box.

9. A set of color markers will do you a world of good when you’re labeling your already packed cardboard boxes. In addition to using different colors for easier post move identification, the markers will prevent mistakes regarding what’s what in each container, which in turn will cause you to lose additional time.

10. Sort out all the items in your garage. This sorting task will take time but you just have to do it because of the fact that storage areas usually contain either extremely useful things or extremely worthless ones. Designate two large zones and place all the items you’re taking with you in one zone, and then leave the rest into the second one.

11. Be mindful that some garage items are forbidden for transportation for safety reasons, and your movers won’t move them for you. Items such as fuel, oils, paint and paint thinners, propane tanks, chemicals, car batteries, cleaning supplies and others are considered dangerous. Contact your movers and ask them about the list of forbidden items for transportation.

12. Having found out which items you are not supposed to pack due to their hazardous nature /flammable, corrosive, or explosive/, you have a few good options to get rid of them prior to the move. You best option is to give them away to friends or neighbors, but if that is not worth it for whatever reason, then you can just throw them away for recycling.

13. Before you learn how to pack your garage, it’s time to decide what you will do with all the non-hazardous things you don’t need anymore, and therefore won’t move to your new home. This time, your best bet is to organize a moving sale and attempt to pocket some cash from the possessions that still have a decent market value.

14. And now that you have sorted out your garage items and gotten rid of the ones you either don’t need or are not allowed to transport, let’s describe the best way to pack a garage for moving. The very first garage packing tip? Place all smaller hand tools you have /screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, etc./ in your toolbox and keep them there during the house move.

15. How to pack garage tools? If no special-purpose toolbox is available, you should use sturdy cardboard boxes of small to medium size to accommodate your garage hand tools. Such tools are known to be fairly heavy, so don’t pack them in large boxes because they will quickly add to the overall weight and may cause the container to break and thus, compromise the moving day safety.

16. Take extra precautions when packing sharp-edge garage and garden tools such as saws and knives of different kind, gardening sheers, pickaxes, rakes, hoes, scythes, etc. Use old blankets, old towels or sheets of bubble wrap to cover the sharp edges or blades, then secure the wrapped up parts with pieces of string, rope, or even zip ties.

17. Also, any garden tools you own with long handles should be grouped together and tied as a tight bundle, as well as protected with blankets or towels as described above. Before you do that, however, make sure they are clean /you don’t want to transfer dirt into the moving vehicle, for example/ and their cutting areas are made safe for transportation.

18. If you own any electric power tools, then you only need to find their original packages for best protection. If not, then detach any removable parts (batteries included), coil the power cord around the tool, wrap the entire body in bubble wrap or a piece of clothing of the right size, and place the bundle into a moving box of suitable size.

19. Moving companies won’t transport any gas-operated equipment you own /lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc./ until you have completely out drained their fuel. If there’s plenty of fuel left in the tank, siphon it out with the help of a hand pump. Keep in mind that it’s dangerous to leave even a small amount of fuel in the tank of gas operated machinery during transport.

20. If used practically as a storage area, your garage may have all kinds of odds and ends. In which case, the very question of how to pack up your garage for a move basically comes down to knowing how to pack the various items found inside it. The task of packing up your garage will be a success as long as you stay away from the top 9 common packing mistakes when moving house.

21. If you own a bicycle or bicycles, then you should know that there are special bike boxes you can purchase from your nearest bike shop. However, you should know that there’s a special way to pack up your bike, and that packing method is not straightforward in any means. The good news is that most of the times you won’t need to do that as your bike can be simply loaded into the moving vehicle as it is.

22. Not surprisingly, the thing you will mostly find inside a garage is a car, and sometimes even a motorcycle. Now, if you choose not to drive your own motor vehicle to your next destination, then you will need to contact a top rated auto transportation company to arrange the details. But before you do, here is some good advice on how to prepare your car for shipping.

23. Use the power of photographs to your advantage! Before you disassemble a garage item to its detachable elements, you might want to take photos of how it’s assembled, especially if it consists of numerous complicated parts. These photographs can help you tremendously later after the move is over when you’re about to put back the item in question.

24. When packing a garage to move, it’s essential that you label properly the packed boxes so that no mistakes or identification errors occur when the time comes to unpack them. Take your black marker pen and write GARAGE on all of the boxes, including their detailed contents. Moreover, it’s a good idea to write down any special handling instructions, such as FRAGILE or THIS SIDE UP, if necessary. Follow the link to learn more about how to label moving boxes like a pro.

25. The above tips for packing a garage will help you do a fine packing job all by yourself. Still, if you feel like that particular task is too tough for you, or if you don’t have much time to do it on your own, then it’s best if you get in touch with professional packers and movers.

Aside from your regular items, you will also need to consider packing the seemingly odd but equally important ones. You may have an efficiently functioning aquarium and it just makes sense to bring it along with your fishes to your new home.

First seen on: (

A 200-gallon aquarium might make your house look cooler than any restaurant entrywayever, but it won’t do much wowing at your new place if it’s smashed into 50 bazillion pieces in the moving truck.

To pack it up right, you need the right equipment, says Laura McHolm, co-founder of Los Angeles-based NorthStar Moving Co.

There are mirror boxes specially designed for glass—you can pick them up at hardware stores or directly from moving companies.

“There are special boxes for most household items,” McHolm says. “But be sure to always pack them in something.”

Antique crystal chandeliers

Want to keep your great grandmother’s size-of-a-Buick antique chandelier? Packing the beast up won’t be easy, but it can be done.

“Taking several cartons, cutting them in half and taping the pieces together to form a custom-shaped container is a useful strategy,” says Kevin Kato, professional moving expert and content development editor at

Just make sure you wrap individual glass pieces very carefully in foam packing paper or thin bubble wrap before placing the whole contraption in your custom box.

Life-size cardboard cutouts

Don’t have a Millennium Falcon for safe transporting of that cardboard Han Solo? Don’t let the Imperials win! Try this instead:

“If he can’t use the Force to protect himself, [Han] can be slipped into a mattress carton or simply stuck between your mattress and box spring when you load them vertically onto the truck,” Kato says.

Large indoor trees

Giant indoor trees that brush the ceiling are amazing—until moving day. With those fragile limbs and easily wilted leaves, you’re going to have to take special care.

“Maintain a set of conditions that imitates as closely as possible the environment in the house,” Kato says.

Otherwise, you’ll cause the tree to go into shock. And if it’s extremely delicate, go a step further—some people will even wrap the leaf-bearing branches in dampened newsprint.

Anatomical human skeletons

We’re not going to ask why you have a life-size skeleton in your house. But we do advise caution when moving your medical mini-me—otherwise, when you get to your new place, you might discover the thigh bone is not connected to the hip bone.

“Some large items, if they are not completely geometrically insane, can be padded and sheathed in cardboard,” Kato says.

Just make sure to carefully wrap the more delicate bones or they might break under the pressure, and make sure the cardboard covers from head to toe (pun totally intended!).

Pinball machines and classic arcade games

We don’t want anything to happen to your reconditioned Flash Gordon, either, so you’re going to need padding—a lot of padding.

“Your best bet is to wrap them in blankets or pads—either cloth or the thick brown paper pads the movers use,” Kato says.

Gently tape the ends down so everything stays in place. Then, load it strategically into the truck—by stuffing smaller boxes between the legs and around the sides, you’ll keep the heavier pinball machine from moving around too much in the truck.

Salon chairs and tanning beds

Have your own at-home salon? Lucky you! Well, except for that moving part.

Thankfully, these items are more bulky than fragile, but you’re still going need some special care. Your first task will be to find a box large enough to accommodate the item. Pro tip: You can tape multiple boxes together if you’re careful. Once you have the box, use padding to keep the item in place.

Or, if you’re feeling bold, just throw them on the truck, boxless. But don’t be surprised if your home salon needs a makeover of its own when you’re finished.

Giant musical instruments

Whether you have a baby grand piano or a full-size pipe organ in your living room, moving large musical instruments is never something you should leave up to weak packing boxes.

The best advice is to hire a pro.

There are movers who specialize in organs, pianos, and other instruments. Be sure to ask your moving company how long the instrument will be in transit so it doesn’t warp.

The leg lamp

leg lamp

When it comes to a major award such as a life-size leg lamp, the Old Man might have had the right idea.

Whether it’s a giant woman’s leg or another piece of cherished art, it is fra-gee-lay and you’re going to need something special.

Two words: custom crating.

“You want a company that knows how to build a crate out of cardboard or wood, depending on what the item is,” McHolm says.

Most moving companies—and companies that specialize in moving high-end or unique items individually—can craft a crate for you.

You can always find a way when it comes to packing different types of items. From regular household items to seemingly odd ones, it’s important to set aside some time so you may figure out how they may be securely stored in preparation for your transfer. To ensure the safety of your materials, be sure to book the services of an experienced moving company. is a Chicago based company which can handle residential, commercial and industrial clients. With over 25 years of experience and having served thousands of clients, the company can always assure of efficient transfers every time.

How To Prepare for your Smooth Moving

The post How To Prepare for your Smooth Moving appeared first on Wolley Movers.

Tips to Be Wisely Prepared on Your Move

If you’re planning to transfer homes in a matter of weeks, it will be necessary for you to be well- equipped during your moving process. Most times, there are tips which movers wished their clients knew. This should make the entire transferring activity much more efficient. Whenever possible, it would also be helpful to you to check out phone apps so you would be guided on your checklists in preparation for a possibly arduous activity.

Be sure to speak with a moving company which thoroughly caters to your requirements and specifications. There are transferring groups which have been in the business, and have proven their competency throughout Chicago. All it takes is to be wise enough to choose the mover who can completely meet your needs.

To ensure a much more efficient transferring activity, you must plot your packing schedule ahead of time. All your boxes needs to be neatly taped over and organized. Always make an effort to coordinate with your mover, so you will know and prepare for the next steps which will be taken for the success of your project.

We quizzed some movers on their biggest pet peeves when it comes time for moving day. Here are seven things you need to know.

Moving company Chicago

1. Don’t be afraid to do your homework—in person

“Our industry has a horrible reputation, and we’ve earned it,” says Aaron Steed, CEO of Southern California’s Meathead Movers. “There are good guys and there are bad guys, and it’s really hard to tell at the time of estimate.”

Every company is going to put its best face forward during the estimate process, but when it comes to finding out which companies will move your stuff and make you feel comfortable in the process, Steed recommends stopping by the office. In person.

2. Prep the move beforehand

Before you get out the bubble wrap, figure out what needs to happen for the day to go smoothly. Do you need to reserve your building’s elevator? Will the truck be parking on a busy street? If so, save a spot ahead of time. If you’re moving in or out of an apartment complex, make sure you know the rules—designated moving hours can cause major complications.

3. Get your packing done before moving day

If you’ve elected to do your own packing, make sure it’s finished. That doesn’t mean boxes untaped and scattered throughout the house. That means boxes filled, taped up, and ready to go by the time your movers show up. Ideally, everything will be located in a central room, which speeds up the process and keeps your possessions safe.

4. Label everything

You don’t need to write down the specific contents of every box, but noting where in your new home it should go is essential.

“It’s easier if the movers know where to put it as opposed to trying to delineate where it goes on move day, when we’re charging our hourly rate,” Steed says.

Also, make sure to keep your movers in the loop. If they don’t know what “Humbert’s room” means, it’s the same as if you hadn’t labeled it at all. And now’s the time to decide what area is your “great room” and which is the “den.”

5. Tell us what’s valuable

Try as they might, movers aren’t psychics. They don’t know that the blue vase cost you $2,500, or that your grandma gave you that crystal decanter, or the retail value of your crushed velvet couch. Let them know beforehand what items they should keep a careful eye on.

6. Get out of the way!

That means getting out of the way and letting them work. You’re better served directing the movers to the right rooms or reassembling furniture in your new home. (Movers prefer that you disassemble and reassemble your own stuff, so if you’ve been hoping they’ll take on the task of putting your Ikea bed back together—you might want to think again.)

Not only can an eager homeowner slow down efforts, but he or she can also be an insurance liability.

7. Tip us (and maybe buy lunch)

Yes, you need to tip your movers—between $20 and $50 is standard, according to Steed, but more is always welcome.

Aside from ensuring you’ll work and coordinate well with movers for the benefit of your move, you may also consider an app which can update you throughout the transfer. There are free apps which can serve as your guide throughout the moving process.

Ways to Cut Moving Expenses

The post Ways to Cut Moving Expenses appeared first on Wolley Movers.

Guide to Cut Costs and Stay Lean on Your Move

As much as most of us want to, we cannot entirely bring every small trinket of our old homes during our move. This is why it’s just realistic to ensure we have the basics and the most important items we’ll need as we pack all of our things towards reaching our new houses. Additionally, some would be asking if the conditions of their debts would change or at least be much better when they move to another state. They must then understand how conditions may vary but this does not mean they will entirely be off the hook. Perhaps some circumstances may be more manageable, so they would be in a better disposition to be debt-free.

To ensure you’ll have the most efficient move possible, it would also be practical to seek for the help of professional movers. This way, you can be ensured of having an expert’s recommendation to safely transfer your items to your next destination. During the process of moving to your new home, you will also have to consider downsizing your space. This way, you can have much newer memories and even new home items to fit your new property.

First seen on (

Downsizing could be quite of a challenge if you don’t know where to start from, so here is our list which will guide you step by step into this tough process.

De-clutter. You need to begin downsizing your home by removing all the clutter and garbage that you may have inside. Throw away all obvious things like broken electronics, tools which are no longer working, old fashioned staff you’re never going to wear, the broken hose in the garden, etc. which hangs around long forgotten in the attic, garage and basement. In other words, everything that is in front of your eyes around the house and is a must-go anyway.

Attic, basement, garage, garden. The easiest way to continue downsizing is to go through the least used rooms and premises in your home. This could also be the guest room if you have one, for instance. In such places around the house it is easy to store things you don’t want or need in the moment and then forget about them. But they are still there and will not clean themselves up.

Clean up your car. If you have the habit of hoarding things, you may have been leaving things in your car as well. Remember to check the seats and the trunk. Make the downsizing uncompromising – this is what will make it efficient!

Downsizing Your House In 5 Steps

How do you actually decide what is worth taking and why? These ideas will help you take a decision!

Can you use it at all? There may be items in your home that are broken, torn, or worn out. In other words, they do not longer serve you. So, how about just tossing them away? You don’t need all that. When downsizing from a house to an apartment this is the easiest decision to take – throwing away what is actually useless.

  1. Is it old fashioned? If you really care about fashion then this is an important decision to make. Do you have items that are out of fashion like clothes, shoes and accessories? Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used it for the last two years, chances are you may never do it again. Things that you don’t want in your home and those that are outdated could go away.
  2. Is it of emotional value to you? There are items that are dear to us which hold an emotional value like gifts from people we love and cherish. Those could be souvenir or practical things like clothes. Either way, if you really care about it and want it in your next home, pack it and take it.
  3. Do you really need it? There are some things that we actually need and some – that only fill in the space in the shelves, drawers and racks on our home, collect dust and nothing more. You don’t need to pay to move all that, especially if it is something bigger and/ or heavier!
  4. Do you have room for it? It is important to take measures of your future home and decide what will and what will not fit in it. Why would you pay to move your sofa if there is not enough space in the room for it? Make a floor plan of your next home in order to make the estimations right.
  5. What do you do with the things that are in a good condition and can be used but you have decided not to move? You can organize a moving sale and sell whatever you can. You can separate kids’ clothes and shoes, and toys, and donate them to an orphanage. You can just give away some things. Of course, if you still want to keep some things but will not have space for them in your new home, you can always use a storage unit. And remember to choose a mover carefully!

After having a realistic look at the items which you really need and considering whether it’s acceptable to throw out some clutter, another topic to consider would be on debts. While some may be hopeful of having a much bearable set of conditions given their situation, it would be necessary for them to consider the repercussions of an interstate move.

Many commenters getting ready to relocate to another state have asked whether a judgment in their old one will still stand, once they have moved. Unfortunately, unlike a ratty old couch or all those terrible holiday sweaters your great aunt kept giving you for Christmas, old debts aren’t something you can really leave behind.

In fact, “the United States Constitution requires the new state to give full faith and credit to the judgment issued by the first state,” says April Kuehnhoff, a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center. However, the creditor or debt collector will have some business to take care of before they can come knocking on your new door.

“To reach assets in the new state, the creditor must apply to a court in the new state,” Kuehnhoff says.

Most states follow what’s known as the Uniform Enforcement of Foreign Judgments Act when it comes to dealing with cases that cross state lines. The Act requires that creditors file an authenticated copy of the judgment with a court in the state where enforcement is sought and an affidavit establishing the names and last known addresses of the debtor and creditor. The court will then send notice of the filing to the debtor at the address the creditor provided.

What can I do?

Creditors or collectors often treat judgments as tools to get a debtor to repay on a debt, so, whether you’ve relocated of not, there’s still a chance you can avoid a property lien or wage garnishment.

“Contact the creditor to try to work out a payment plan or try to negotiate for a lower amount [than what the judgement requires you to pay],” Kuehnhoff says.

You may also want to consult a consumer law attorney in your new hometown to see if the move entitles you to some extra protections, regarding how a creditor can collect what you owe. These laws vary state by state and the creditor or debt collector behind the judgment will be required to honor the rules in your new hometown.

Moving Essentials Tips For Your Move

The post Moving Essentials Tips For Your Move appeared first on Wolley Movers.

Things to Remember On the Day of Your Move

There’s certainly a lot to remember when it comes to preparing for the day of your move. Hence lists and the help of your friends will certainly come in handy on such a daunting project. You must think of your essentials so these may be prioritized, since realistically it would really take a lot of time to fully transfer all of your things to another property. Most importantly, your friends’ help will be mostly appreciated and it’s just fair to give them some gestures of appreciation for their efforts.

These considerations will mostly be effective if you will be hiring a highly effective mover to assist and expertly oversee the components of your transfer. As you work with a seasoned transfer specialist, you will primarily need to have documentation and packing supplies on your shortlist of moving day essentials.

1. Documentation. It would be best to collect it all in one file. These should include employment, rent, bank, credit, etc. contracts, dentist/ doctor/ vet records, etc. Prepare all the moving documentation as well like inventory sheet, payment documents, etc. How will you travel to your new home? In case you won’t go by your own car, put together all the traveling documents like bus/ airplane tickets and hotel/ restaurant reservations.

The relocation essentials that you should have are extra tape, boxes, bags, packing paper, bubble wrap and packing peanuts, depending on what type of packing materials you will choose to use. Almost in every move people tend to underestimate the quantity of things they have and spare boxes and bags are needed; especially bags. Since all of your things are in drawers, cupboards, shelves, etc. it is often difficult to estimate precisely exactly how much and whats sort of packing supplies would be good for you exactly on moving day.

3. Medication. Consider what medicines you currently use and what you may need on moving day like painkillers, something to soothe soar throat and any sign of cold, if necessary, or to relieve allergic reactions if you are prone to them. Prepare a medical kit with everything you or the members of your family may need on moving day. Do your children or pets use medications currently? Make sure you do not pack medicines that are expired!

4. What do you need from the bathroom? Consider toothbrush and toothpaste, hair brush, razor and shaving cream, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, antiperspirant, toilet paper, wet wipes, towels and cosmetics that you use. Depending on your location and day of the move you may also need a repellent. It would be good to get an extra set of clothes for each member of your family while on the road.

5. For the children. Kids will need to have their favorite toys, also snacks and drinks. You could consider taking for them games to play while on the road. We have an article with some great ideas on making moving stress free for your kids.

6. Consider your pets as well. They will need to have their bowls for food and water so you could fill them as well, occasionally. Another option that you have is to leave them temporarily at a pet hotel for a day or two until you relocate and then take them back. Moving with pets is fun but you also need to think about their needs as well. The process of relocation itself may be stressful for them especially if you are going long distance to a different state.

7. Prepare your home before you leave. You will need cleaning materials to put your house or apartment in order, bags for the trash and cleaning equipment like a vacuum cleaner.

Here are some useful easy cleaning tips.

8. Food and drinks while on the road. Especially if you are relocating out of state with your car, it is certain that you will need to refresh yourself with a drink. Preparing sandwiches, getting some snacks, water and other drinks would be a good idea, plus plastic cups, plates and cutlery. Have some goodies to go on the road while you are moving.

The mentioned categories will have their corresponding intricacies which naturally have to be further labeled, simplified and secured to easy transfers and unpacking. This is where lots of help from your friends and family members will be quite appreciated.

To ensure that your friends remain, well, friends, there are two cardinal rules to keep in mind before the move:

1. Make the whole process as efficient and hassle-free as possible. It probably won’t be fun, but it doesn’t have to be backbreaking or traumatic either.

2. Make your gratitude clear. You don’t need to change your will or buy your pals Mini Coopers, but do make them feel good about participating.

So go ahead and get started! You’ll still have a few friends left after the move. We promise.

Before you move

  • Don’t: Fold boxes closed to save tape. Your buds will be stuck balancing fragile boxes all day.
  • Do: Label every box with a coordinating room for easy drop-off.
  • Don’t: Pack a few big boxes with a ton of heavy stuff. You may end up with fewer boxes, but those boxes will be nearly impossible to carry. Why do this to people you purportedly like?
  • Do: Use medium-size boxes. Experts say they are the best size for simpler moves. You can use a couple of big boxes for bulky but light things such as comforters and towels.

During your move

  • Don’t: Overload your chums’ cars with boxes, saving your own for the little TLC leftovers. Nothing says “team spirit” like a four-car pileup because everyone in your convoy was attempting to check their rearview mirror and seeing only a tiny crack between stacks of boxes.
  • Do: Pay for gas for every driver. Then go further: “Top off this gesture with a gas gift card they can use down the road,” says Tiffany Nielsen, etiquette coach and CEO of Premier Etiquette in Exeter, CA.
  • Don’t: Keep promising pizza at the end of the day, like some kind of pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. This is (sorry) cheesy. And you might end up with a mutiny on your hands by 2 p.m.
  • Do: “Throughout the move—beginning to end—provide good snacks and plenty of drinks,” Nielsen says. “Make sure to have plenty of [disposable] plates, utensils, napkins, and cups on hand.”

After your move

  • Don’t: Finish the day by telling your friends they should rummage around the cooler for leftover snacks and half-warm sodas.
  • Do: Deliver them some ice-cold beer, strong mojitos, Starbucks Frappuccinos, or whatever floats your (and their) boat. “When the work is done, deliver a grateful toast, sit back, and relax,” Nielsen says.
  • Do: Take everyone out to a proper meal at a restaurant that doesn’t use paper plates but is casual enough for your somewhat rumpled crew. Order lots of apps!

These mentioned, thorough pointers should help you be more prepared on your upcoming transfer.
